I actually got the first half of my tattoo last week. I’m really pleased with the way it’s looking, though it’s obviously not healed yet, and I still have to go back for the second half. I explained, in a previous post, why I felt the need to get a tattoo, but I didn’t explain the particular one that I was getting.
The half that I got is a quote from the Hellblazer comics, and possibly my favorite quote of all time. “Reality’s just a story that’s taken on a life of its own.” I love this idea for several reasons.
One- it reminds me that we get to shape our own reality. If you believe something strongly enough, you can make it real, at least when it comes to your own actions, behaviors, thoughts. You can convince yourself that you are the person you want to be, and make that person into a reality.
Two- it sort of makes you feel like it’s okay to live in your own little fantasy world, the way I tend to do. Like, it doesn’t really matter if something is actually true or not. If the stories you tell yourself, in order to feel better about life, work for you, then go ahead and keep telling them and they can be real to you. Disclaimer- obviously, this rule only applies if your stories aren’t harmful, or an excuse to do things that negatively effect others.
Three- I feel like it perfectly sums up what it means to be a writer. Writing is all about taking a story and turning it into reality, giving it a, “life of its own.”
